Registered-data under construction The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered. |

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
Purpose:
This qualification provides learners with vocational/professional knowledge, skills and competencies related to architecture, the construction industry and property development projects. It also equips learners with a foundation for further intellectual development and opportunities for gainful employment and rewarding contributions to the society. The qualification provides the built environment professions with qualified persons who possess contextually specific professional, technological and problem-solving skills and produces learners who are prepared for and understand the principles of lifelong learning, critical citizenship, and a wide range of issues which are crucial to the welfare of society, for example the upliftment, empowerment and transformation. Finally, the qualification contributes towards a learner's personal Career path development by affording opportunities to gain additional qualifications in architecture and/or related fields. Rationale: The Qualification has been developed to enable learners to enter the research field with a view to enhancing Career opportunities in the academic environment and to open Career opportunities through increased status as consultants within the built environment. Society is benefited through the production of professionals with considerable specialised expertise, research and leadership skills. |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
Learners desiring entrance are advised, assisted and supported (portfolio compilation, orientation to the required levels of competence, substantiation of their claims regarding prior skills or experience, planning of progression. They are evaluated and assessed in accordance with their claims regarding prior skills and experience gained (portfolio review, implementation of assessment/evaluation methods, recommendations arising from the assessment/evaluation processes. Furthermore, learners are provided with quality management and assurance objectives to support the achievement of competence leading to the award of the qualification (assessment of competence in respect of required outcomes, auditing, approval, recommendation and reporting). EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES |
1. The qualifying learner is competent to identify, evaluate and solve problems within the ambit of the research area and is required to demonstrate a high level or responsibility and ethics both within the immediate context of the problem and with regard to society as a whole.
2. The qualifying learner is required to operate effectively in an academic environment with peers and supervisors. Where appropriate to the research area, the learner is required to interact effectively with communities and other groups and individuals outside the academic arena. 3. The learner is required to have extensive communication skills and the ability to produce material of an internationally acceptable standard. 4. The qualifying learner is required to have extensive skills and knowledge in the area of information retrieval, data collection, analysis, organisation and evaluation. 5. The qualifying learner will have built on his or her existing knowledge and is able to evaluate the application thereof in relation to wider local and global environmental concerns. 6. The learner will be able to locate his/her decision making and proposals within wider social, legal, economic, intellectual and environmental contexts. 7. The qualifying learner will have developed a high level of self-management with a critical awareness of personal values. 8. The qualifying learner is exposed to a range of sophisticated learning strategies, and is expected to make informed decisions and is required to act responsibly and ethically, with full regard to the needs and aspirations of the society within which he or she operates. |
ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
The following Associated Assessment Criteria will be used in an integrated manner across the Exit Level Outcomes:
Integrated Assessment: Being a primarily research based degree the integrated assessment is culminated in a research report that requires the candidate to not only integrate the various fields of knowledge of the discipline itself but also the application of research methodology. In addition to the report colloquiums will also provide opportunities for integrated formative and summative assessment. Although the final report will be for summative purposes there will be various interventions with the candidate during the process to address formative assessment. By means of and integrated continuous assessment approach the theory and practice in architectural technology are assessed to ensure students meet the outcomes as stated. The research component is assessed by means of a Research Report as well as an article that needs to be prepared for final submission and assessment. For all the assessment purpose aimed at identifying, developing and solving an architectural design problem, in the format of an architectural project, and to report on the problem, the objectives set, the process followed, methodologies employed and to argue the appropriateness to be achieved, continuous assessment strategies while the research skills are assessed by means of a dissertation and articles will be utilised as assessment methods. |
INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY |
International comparability of this qualification is ensured in Commonwealth countries through agreements with the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Commonwealth Association of Architects, through the granting of Part 2 Exemption. Standards are equal to final qualifications in Architecture in the abovementioned countries, which have comparable architectural education systems to South Africa. The professional master's is recognised in the United States of America(USA), Germany and other European countries who are members of the Union of International Architects. |
